Lead Curse Tablet discovered at Mount Ebal supports the Bible's own internal timeline

One enormous discovery

Last night Archeologist (and friend of the Word for Word Bible Comic- see below) Dr Scott Stripling and the Associates of Biblical Research team announced a new discovery. A tiny lead tablet (2cm x 2cm) found at mount Ebal in Israel in 2020 has recently been scanned using cutting edge tomographic technology (similar to a medical CT scan) to reveal the words inscribed on the inside of the folded lead artefact.

What they discovered was not only the earliest example of proto Hebrew text by over 200 years but it features a curse and was found at Mount Ebal the mountain where the curses of Deuteronomy were to be read!

“When the Lord your God has brought you into the land you are entering to possess, you are to proclaim on Mount Gerizim the blessings, and on Mount Ebal the curses.” (Deuteronomy 11:29 NIV).

The fulfilment of Moses command in Deut 11:29 comes in the time of Joshua (Josh 8:34:35 WEB below)

The actual words on the lead tablet read:

Cursed, cursed, cursed - cursed by the God YHW.
You will die cursed.
Cursed you will surely die.
Cursed by YHW – cursed, cursed, cursed.

There are huge implications, as Dr Scott Stripling puts it…

“This is earlier than many sceptics believe the Bible existed, making this the earliest appearance of the word YHWH in Israel and it was found at a covenant site. The implications are enormous and will reverberate for many years to come.”

Moses commanded the children of Israel to build an altar on Mount Ebal (Joshua 8:30-31a WEB below), which is where the artefact was discovered.

Dating the Exodus and the Conquest

Much of the announcement has revolved around the proof that the Bible could have be written as contemporary with the events as it states. This is a big deal to rebut sceptical scholars who say the Bible was all created in the Persian era, but as I (probably like yourself) was already convinced of this fact, I found the more interesting element how the discovery supports the dating of the Conquest and the Exodus to be in line with what the Bible itself states.

There is a lot of confusion around the dating of the Exodus, and while there are a range of views there are two major camps. The first support the view that the Exodus was in the time of Ramses II around 1200 BC, which seems to be based on the fact the Israelites were enslaved to build a city called “Ramses” and it is a traditional view. However, when you scratch the surface the proponents of this view seem to state things like “Exodus myth include the documented movements of small groups of Ancient Semitic-speaking peoples into and out of Egypt during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Dynasties,”(Meyers 2005, pp. 8–10.) and “Scholarly estimates for how many people could have been involved in such an exodus range from a few hundred to a few thousand people.” (Faust 2015, p. 476.) My own research on this view finds little to support it besides the city name which could be independently called Ramses which means “Begotten of Ra”, or more likely, it is an anachronistic naming for a place later renamed after the Pharoah.

The second camp is based on the Bible’s own stated timeline. A key verse is:

In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the temple of the Lord. 1 Kings 6:1 NIV

We have a strong chronology placing the building of Solomons temple to between 1020 and 950 BCE giving us an Exodus date of 1500- 1450 BC, as well as all the other dates and durations within the Bible which can be harmonised to indicate an Exodus date within this range. Therefore I believe that this view is the one in line with a high view of Scripture. The puzzle over who exactly was Pharoah in Egypt during the Exodus is down to the inconsistencies of the Egyptian timeline, not the Biblical one, but that’s another story. Conclusion

The point is, this lead tablet from ~1400-1300 BC with a curse found on Mount Ebal, written in paleo-Hebrew with the name God gave to Moses blows the more liberal view out of the water.

I’m praying this piece of evidence discovered by Dr Stripling and the team will cut through many sceptics’ rejection of the Bible and convince them to read and trust its words more closely.

Luke 21:22 "...all that has been written"...where?

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus prophecies the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. In one of the verses he says…

“For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.” Luke 21:22

…but I wanted to know where it had been written?

Answer

The verse that specifically nails down this event is in Daniel, in the seventy weeks prophecy. He says that the Messiah (Jesus) will be put to death and then the city and the Sanctuary will be destroyed.

Daniel 9:26a NIV

26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary.

I then used the verse in the image. Converting the Hebrew text into the paleo Hebrew of Daniel’s day.

Also…

There are many other candidates in the OT as well, however as they predate the Babylonian Siege of Jerusalem (~589 and 587 BC) these could be foretelling that siege or the 70 AD event.

Here is a list of Old Testament verses foretelling this destruction of the city:

Deut 28:47-57 NIV (After the Blessings for Obedience and Curses for Disobedience)

Because you did not serve the Lord your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, 48 therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you.

49 The Lord will bring a nation against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an eagle swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old or pity for the young. 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine or olive oil, nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined. 52 They will lay siege to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.

53 Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you. 54 Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, 55 and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities. 56 The most gentle and sensitive woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter 57 the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For in her dire need she intends to eat them secretly because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of your cities.

1 Kings 9:6-9 NIV (God’s warning to Solomon)

6 “But if you[a] or your descendants turn away from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you[b] and go off to serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples. 8 This temple will become a heap of rubble. All[c] who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’ 9 People will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why the Lord brought all this disaster on them.’”

Psalm 79:1-4

1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple,
they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2 They have left the dead bodies of your servants
as food for the birds of the sky,
the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.
3 They have poured out blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there is no one to bury the dead.
4 We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,
of scorn and derision to those around us.

Micah 3:8-12

8 But as for me, I am filled with power,
    with the Spirit of the Lord,
    and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob his transgression,
    to Israel his sin.

Hear this, you leaders of Jacob,
    you rulers of Israel,
who despise justice
    and distort all that is right;
10 who build Zion with bloodshed,
    and Jerusalem with wickedness.
11 Her leaders judge for a bribe,
    her priests teach for a price,
    and her prophets tell fortunes for money.
Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say,
    “Is not the Lord among us?
    No disaster will come upon us.”
12 Therefore because of you,
    Zion will be plowed like a field,
Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble,
    the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.

Note: There is also a prophetic besieging of “Ariel”/Jerusalem in Isaiah 29, but the context here seems to be the End Times assault on Jerusalem as in this passage the Lord of Host will destroy the army of “all nations” with “thunder and earthquake and loud noise, with whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire”

GOSPEL CONTRADICTION? "O JERUSALEM, JERUSALEM, WHO KILL THE PROPHETS..." WHO WAS RIGHT, LUKE OR MATTHEW?

While I've been creating the Word for Word Bible Comic I came across some verses which appear in Matthew and in Luke but at different times in different contexts. I had no problem with it in the Matthew context as the words of Jesus make perfect sense there, but in Luke, the context seemed all wrong, so I had to look deeper.

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’” Luke 13:34-35 and Matthew 23:37-39 NIV


STANDARD EXPLANATIONS

In Matthew's Gospel Jesus says this when leaving the Temple, the last time he teaches there before his capture and Crucifixion, so the line "Look, your house is left to you desolate" seems in context as he is leaving the ‘house’ and without Jesus, it is desolate spiritually. Then he says to the people of Jerusalem (who are there) "For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'" which also fits the context.

But in Luke's account, he says these words outside Jerusalem, so the people of Jerusalem can't hear the words "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who..." so it seems Luke has editorialised things and the verse has ended up in the wrong location. Reading numerous commentaries on this I see that most scholars believe that Jesus either said the words twice (Stier, Pulpit Commentary) or that He said it just once and they justify their speculations about the positioning.

For example, if the words "For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'" should be in Luke ordering, then Jesus means that the people of Jerusalem will see him and with palm fronds, sing these words at the 'triumphal entry' which does happen (Matt 21:9) (Wieseler, Paulus, Olshausen, Holtzmann, and others). However, I do not believe this would fit the broader meaning of his words and as Lange puts it "[Jesus] thereby would state nothing else than the term of His impending arrival in the capital".

However other Scholars believe that if it is not said twice the logical location should be as quoted in Matthew's gospel, for the reasons discussed above, and that these words refer to the Second Coming, similar to Matt 26:64. (Lange, Meyers).

However, although I've learned that some of the Gospel writers do reorder the events they describe (particularly Luke), we don't normally see a mix up of the quoted words and the explicit location or time that they are spoken like in this example. In regards to understanding and trusting the scriptures, this is not a huge issue as Jesus spoke the words and the statement's meaning is more important than the stated context, but as someone who believes the Bible to be inerrant and also someone depicting the scenes where the words are spoken I wasn't satisfied with the explanations given (above). I didn't want to draw the words spoken twice in different contexts if they were in truth spoken once and just re-ordered by Luke.

THE KEY TO UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY

I believe I discovered the key to unlocking this mystery in the "Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges". In this commentary of Luke 13:34, they state "There is a remarkable parallel in 2 Esdras 1:30-33."

What is Esdras? I asked myself. Then, (as I'd suspected) I discovered it is a Book of the Apocrypha, (a collection of books that are not considered Biblical canon in Protestant churches but are included in a canon in the Roman Catholic, Syriac and Ethiopian traditions and parts of the Oriental Orthodox church) and is believed to be written by Ezra (of "The Book of Ezra" fame).

Now, before you abandon ship, I ask you to just read the passage (below) and even the whole one chapter book (bottom). I don't normally look at the Apocryphal Books but I was very surprised to see the similarity and would go as far as to say that (canon or not) it seems to me Jesus was quoting from this book:


(In the quote the Prophet is speaking the words of the Father)

"I gathered you as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But now, what shall I do to you? I will cast you out from my presence. When you offer oblations to me, I will turn my face from you; for I have rejected your festal days, and new moons, and circumcisions of the flesh. I sent you my servants the prophets, but you have taken and killed them and torn their bodies in pieces; I will require their blood of you, says the Lord. Thus says the Lord Almighty: Your house is desolate; I will drive you out as the wind drives straw..." 2 Esdras 1:30-33 NRSV


It seems to be all the same points, raised in the same few sentences, though slightly rearranged. Even "O Jerusalem" has its parallel with 2 Esdras 1:24 "What shall I do to you, O Jacob? You, Judah, would not obey me."


At the very end of Esdras, it also talks about people coming from the East to be with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, a lot like 5 verses earlier in Luke.

"And now, father, look with pride and see the people coming from the east; to them I will give as leaders Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and Hosea and Amos and Micah and Joel and Obadiah and Jonah and Nahum and Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi, who is also called the messenger of the Lord." 2 Esdras 1:38-40


“There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God." Luke 13:28-29.


As I said, I was very surprised, but it's not the only instance of canon scriptures quoting non-canonical scriptures. In Jude 1:14-15 he seems to be quoting the Book of Enoch, and the Assumption of Moses in another section.


CONCLUSION


So, I believe that although this prophecy of Ezra has not made it into Protestant Canon, Jesus is quoting it nevertheless, and because it is a quote of a relevant prophetic scripture that Jesus is saying, the exact words don't have to fit the exact situation (grammatically or specifically) as he is quoting and not speaking normally to the people there. It seems to me, then, that in both instances Jesus is quoting this scripture (known to the Pharisees) to remind them of the broader message of the Book of Esdras and how that links to the situation, or in Matthew's scenario, it's partial fulfilment.


BUT WAIT… THERE'S MORE


Probably like you, I'm not keen on relying on extra-Biblical sources to interpret the scripture in this way. But in this case, it seems clear to me that Jesus is employing 2 Esdras to make his point. While it's possible that this Scripture is not "inspired" and Jesus is just using a known text to make a point, it seems rather that Jesus is giving this somewhat forgotten (to us) text his seal of approval. The other part that I found really interesting is where the prophecy goes following the section Christ mentions.

“Thus says the Lord Almighty: Your house is desolate; I will drive you out as the wind drives straw; and your sons will have no children, because with you they have neglected my commandment and have done what is evil in my sight. I will give your houses to a people that will come, who without having heard me will believe. Those to whom I have shown no signs will do what I have commanded. They have seen no prophets, yet will recall their former state. I call to witness the gratitude of the people that is to come, whose children rejoice with gladness; though they do not see me with bodily eyes, yet with the spirit they will believe the things I have said." 2 Esdras 1:33-37

To me this sounds a lot like what happened to the nation of Israel directly after the destruction of the temple, and then...who are these people who are to come, that are not of Israel but, though the Spirit, believe in God, do as he commands and rejoices with gladness and gratitude?

What does "Shake the dust off your feet" look like?

In Matt 10:11 and Luke 10:11 (and several other places) Jesus tells the disciples:

”If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.” Matt 10:11 NIV

Clearly the expression is an idiom like “you should wash your hands of the situation”. But as I am drawing this feet shaking, what does it look like?

Ask an expert

I asked my historical/cultural consultants Dr. Mark Woolmer and Arkan Amin Zaki Al-Amin “Do you know how it's done? Do you take your sandal off and wave it, do you shake your foot, do you wipe your foot on a stone?”

Arkan advised that “Jesus says, "Shake the dust off your feet." This is an ancient way still used today to "discard" a relationship or task. Shaking your feet or the lower part of your robes to shake off the dust stirred up by your feet. It means "I am finished with you and am leaving. Furthermore, as I leave, I take nothing from this house, not even its dust!" (like Acts 13:51). I remember it from a lecture almost 17 years ago by Ken Bailey. What I remember him saying was that you would shake the lower part of the robe/tunic or take off the cloak and shake it”

Dr. Mark Woolmer advised “Luke uses the Greek word πόδας which means foot*, however, it is possible that the meaning could also include shaking the hem of an ankle length garment (an obscure meaning of πόδας is "the hem of ship's sail") which would fit with the shaking of the lower part of the garment suggested by Bailey”.

*- Arkan also points out that the word used for foot can be used any part of the leg and is not as limited as the English definition.

These helpful comments helped me draw the image in a way where the disciple is shaking his foot and the hem meaning that it is right either way. Here is the inked drawing where you can even still see the purple “pencils”

The Gospel of Luke's New Cover

Thank you so much to everyone who gave their opinions and voted on the various cover designs and iterations. I'm really pleased with the end result and think it will fit well with its Brothers (as Leslie called Mark and Matthew). As you can see we have Jesus in the crown of thorns standing in a posture reminiscent of Caesar reminding us that he is the King of Kings. Also, we have Luke's face, Mary and baby Jesus, the Roman Centurion and in the background a Greek inscription from the Temple in Jerusalem from Jesus' day, warning Gentiles not to cross into the Temple proper on pain of death. A good juxtaposition from the message of Luke's gospel I felt.

Christmas Angels

Recently there seems to have been a lot of renditions of "biblically accurate angels" popping up on social media, one of my favourites was this angelic Ophanim Christmas tree topper (from Etsy artist "teensiebug") though I'm not sure about the creepy human skin. Ophanim are the "wheels within wheels" angelic beings of Ezekiel 1:15-21, though the name is derived from the Book of Enoch.





A while back, in September 2014, I did a lot of research into the appearance of angels and created a detailed blog with the information and my thoughts on how to draw them, since then the blog has had over 55,000 views!

Prayer


The USA and Canada Launch: This is our second English and Spanish title released in the USA and Canada in 2 months. We hope this quick release will build the wave with the last book on the run out to Christmas. Please pray with us that the books get more of a foothold in Amazon and Christian Books etc, and we can reach more people there with the Gospel.

Prisons: We're still trickling a few dozen bible comics into prisons, but we are praying this trickle will turn into a torrent. Please help us as we pray the God will open this door and get his word into more prisons across the world.
